INDIANAPOLIS (April 14, 2016) – A strong start from Wilfredo Boscan helped the Indianapolis Indians to a 5-1 Opening Night win over Columbus at Victory Field on Thursday.

Boscan (1-0) received the win for 6.0 innings of shutout ball, scattering five hits with one walk and three strikeouts.

Columbus’ Will Roberts (0-1) took the loss after allowing four earned runs in 5.1 innings of work. The Clippers moved to 2-4 and remain in fourth in the IL West.

Gift Ngoepe finished 3-for-4 with two doubles, two runs scored, and an RBI.

The Indians (3-2) got on the board in the third thanks to a leadoff double from Ngoepe for his first hit of the year. He later scored on an unusual play that began with a bunt single from Alen Hanson towards third that moved Ngoepe to third before taking home on an apparent defensive attention lapse.

Indianapolis added to its lead in the fourth on an RBI double from Dan Gamache. The opposite gap shot chased home Willy Garcia, who singled ahead of him.

The Tribe made the score 4-0 with a two-run fifth. Ngoepe got his second base hit and Hanson plated him with his 65th career triple, and first of the year.

Apart from his fine day at the dish, Ngoepe’s glove dazzled at shortstop. He ended the sixth on an outstanding backhand stab and throw to first from deep in the hole.
