Police: Grandfather shoots grandson at Kosciusko County gravel pit

LEESBURG, Ind. (WANE) – Authorities are investigating a shooting that took place late Sunday afternoon at a gravel pit in the town of Leesburg in Kosciusko County.

According to a news release from the Kosciusko County Sheriff’s Department, officers received a report of a domestic dispute at the Leesburg Gravel Pit located just south of School Street and east of State Road 15 at around 5:15 p.m.

Investigators determined the incident started when Colby Kuczewski, 20, of Columbia City allegedly injured Katheryn Wilcox, 20, also of Columbia City during the dispute.

The vehicle the two were in became stuck at the gravel pit and members of Colby’s family arrived to help free it and that’s when the dispute escalated.

Colby got into a physical altercation with his grandfather, Buddy Kuczewski, 70, of Leesburg and others at the gravel pit and at some point during the fight, Colby was able to take a knife from Buddy.

Colby then made threats to hurt himself and that’s when police say Buddy retrieved a .357 revolver and shot Colby in the upper left leg.

Colby was taken to a hospital in Fort Wayne for treatment where he was listed in serious condition.

Katheryn Wilcox was treated and released at a Warsaw hospital.

The case has been forwarded to the Kosciusko County Sheriff’s Department for possible charges.
