From the La Porte County Sheriff’s Office:

On Wednesday, the La Porte County Sheriff’s Office responded to a burglary that occurred while the elderly homeowner was home.

The incident occurred in the 1500 N block of CR 850 E which is near the town of Mill Creek, Indiana. Sheriff’s deputies responded at approximately 1:35 PM and upon arrival learned that the 91-year-old female resident was home and had answered a knock at the door and began speaking with a black male that was inquiring about trimming tree branches on her property for free.
Prior to this the victim’s brother-in-law had been approached by the same suspects who were inquiring about a trailer for sale and then claimed to be lost and began asking for directions to SR 2. When that homeowner, who also resides on CR 850 E, saw the suspects head in the opposite direction of SR 2 he became concerned for his sister-in-law.

He explained to responding deputies that he took a handgun and headed to his sister-in-law’s home where he found the suspect’s vehicle parked. When he went into the home he observed one of the suspects in the living room, fleeing from the home. As he chased the suspect outside of the home he observed a second suspect running toward their vehicle. He pointed his firearm at the suspects and ordered them to stop however they fled.

The elderly female was found inside of the home, unharmed. She reported that approximately $2,000.00 in half-dollars had been taken from the home.

Suspect #1 was described as “clean cut” Hispanic or black male with a lot of tattoos. The second suspect was described as a black male wearing a black shirt and black pants. The suspect vehicle was described as a silver Jeep Cherokee with tinted windows and Illinois license plates. The vehicle was last seen traveling east on CR 150 N from CR 850 E.
