UPDATE: 1 killed in officer-involved shooting in Elkhart

ELKHART (WNDU) – One person is dead and another injured in a police-involved shooting in Elkhart. Two others were also shot but not by officers, according to police.

Just before 4 a.m., police responded to a burglary in the 500 block of Capitol Boulevard. While officers were investigating, they heard gunshots. Police ran on foot and fired their weapons at a vehicle in the 1800 block of Decamp.

Elkhart Police Chief Ed Windbigler tells NewsCenter 16 the vehicle ended up crashing in the same block. One person inside died; a second person was injured, but police say it’s unclear if that person was shot or hurt previous to the police-involved shooting.

Police found a third person, who had been shot, outside 1807 DeCamp Avenue.

A fourth person showed up at Elkhart General Hospital with gunshot injuries.

Detectives from Indiana State Police have taken over the investigation. That’s standard protocol following an officer-involved shooting.
