UPDATE: Former Irish running back Greg Bryant dies after being shot in Florida

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. Former Notre Dame running back Greg Bryant has passed away at a Florida hospital after being shot Saturday morning on Interstate-95 in southern Florida.

Police say Bryant and passenger Maurice Grover were found shot early Saturday in a car along southbound Interstate 95. Grover had minor injuries.

West Palm Beach Police spokeswoman Lori Colombino said Bryant was declared brain dead at 1 p.m. Sunday. Her statement added the investigation into the shooting of 21-year-old is now classified as a homicide, according to the Associated Press.

“This is such a sad and tragic situation,” Notre Dame football coach Brian Kelly said in a statement Sunday. “My thoughts and prayers, as well as those of everyone associated with University of Notre Dame and its football program, are with Greg’s family at this incredibly difficult time.”

Bryant rushed for 289 yards on 54 carries and three touchdown as a sophomore for the Irish in 2014. He was suspended for the entire 2015 season because of academics and elected to transfer.

He spent last season living in hotel rooms in Miami with friends while attending classes at ASA College, playing in only one game.

Bryant has since ended up at UAB, the biggest name in the school’s first recruiting class since restarting the football program.

Many of Bryant’s former Irish teammates tweeted out messages of remembrance.

“The hard fight is over. Prayers to your family and friends, Rest in Peace GB,” said Notre Dame wide receiver and Student Body President Corey Robinson.

“Forever young. Rest easy GB,” wrote Notre Dame quarterback DeShone Kizer.

“Man… I don’t know what to think right now.. RIP GB. I can’t believe this happened. Cherish Life,” said former Notre Dame offensive lineman and Baltimore Raven Ronnie Stanley.”
